If you're looking for a spacious recreational vehicle that doesn't require towing but the bus-style class A motorhomes are too large for your needs, a Class C may be ideal for you. Before committing to buying one, it's important to learn more about their characteristics and particularities, which can help you make an informed decision. Our inventory at Bretz RV & Marine includes a wide variety of Class C motorhomes that you can choose from. This article can help you make the right choice.
What Is a Class C Motorhome?
Class C motorhomes, also called mini-motorhomes, are drivable recreational vehicles that are built on either a truck bed or a van frame. This essentially gives them truck- or van-like maneuverability, making them easier to drive than larger Class A motorhomes. Their front end is also similar to that of a pickup truck or van, which can be helpful for novice RV-ers with previous truck or van driving experience. This doesn't mean that Class C motorhomes compromise on space or luxury, however. Most Class C motorhomes can host up to seven people, making them a great fit for family adventures.
Why Choose a Class C Motorhome?
Some of the main reasons why a Class C motorhome may be a good choice for you are:
- They're relatively easy to drive. Driving a large vehicle like a Class A motorhome can be a hassle and may prevent you from reaching certain outdoor camping locations. Despite their generous interior size, Class C motorhomes are pretty easy to drive.
- There's plenty of space for everyone. Despite being smaller than Class A motorhomes, there's plenty of interior space for all passengers and their cargo.
- They're safer than other motorhome types. Their van or truck chassis makes them sturdy enough to withstand even a serious collision. This, plus their enhanced maneuverability, makes them one of the safest types of motorhomes available.
- They're easier to heat or cool. Having a relatively compact living space means that reaching the right temperature takes less than for larger motorhomes.
- They're easy to get in and out of. Class C motorhomes are built close to the ground, making it easy to enter and exit.
- You can use them for towing. Some Class C motorhomes have powerful engines and heavy-duty chassis, making them suitable for towing. This means that you can take your boat or dirtbikes with you on your adventures.
What Should You Consider Before Buying a Class C Motorhome?
There are some things you should take into consideration before deciding on a particular Class C motorhome to buy. The first thing you need to think about is how comfortable you are driving it. You may think you have the driving experience and skill to drive it but you may find it more challenging than you think. Luckily, as in most things, practice makes perfect. Don't get discouraged if you find it difficult at first, and try to find a Class C motorhome with a comfortable cockpit.
Another major factor is the motorhome's floor plan. This depends on what you plan on doing with it and who is likely to join you. If you're only planning on taking one or two people with you on your outdoor adventures, there's usually no need for extra beds. You can use that space for storage space, as you'll always have plenty of stuff you'll want to take with you on your trips.
What Is a Super C Motorhome?
A Super C motorhome is a Class C recreational vehicle that uses a heavy-duty truck chassis instead of a van frame or regular pickup truck chassis. This provides way more room for both passengers and cargo. They also typically have more slide-outs, increasing available space even further. Super C motorhomes tend to be more expensive than regular Class C ones, but you'll likely be getting extra space, more luxury amenities, superior durability, and extended towing capacity.
Class C Motorhome Storage and Features
Some distinct features of Class C motorhomes include:
- An overhead bunk: You'll instantly recognize a Class C motorhome after seeing the area above the cab. Depending on your needs, it can be used as an extra bed or for storage.
- Seating and furniture: A quality Class C motorhome will provide all the comfort you get in your home, in a smaller space. This includes sofas, TVs, queen beds, fully equipped kitchens, and U-shaped dinettes, which are multifunctional living areas that can serve as a working space, dining area, games room, or additional sleeping space.
- Basement storage area: Class C motorhomes are typically designed to provide plenty of storage space below the living area. Just remember to place all items in a way that keeps the motorhome balanced.
New vs. Used
As with any other vehicle, one of the first questions you need to answer before buying is whether to get a new or pre-owned one. The pros of buying a new one are fairly obvious, as you'll be getting a motorhome in perfect condition and you'll be the first one to use it. Also, RV manufacturers are constantly working to create better and more feature-rich motorhomes. The downside is that you'll be spending a lot of money, especially for a large and well-equipped one.
You can save a significant part of that money by buying a used Class C motorhome. You may even find one that's in good condition and only a few years old for close to half its original price. However, it's difficult to know exactly what you're going to get. That shiny and affordable RV may need significant repairs in the near future.
