Driving an RV is one of the best ways to travel the country and see all of its beautiful sights. For drivers who don't need as much space as a traditional RV offers, there are Class B motorhomes that offer the perfect way to take a road trip in style. These smaller RVs include many of the same perks as larger types of RVs, but they're easier to drive and park in tight spaces. Here's a look at some of the key characteristics of a Class B motorhome to help you decide if it's the right ride for you.
Compact Size
One of the defining characteristics of a Class B RV is its compact size. A Class B RV is much smaller than a Class A gas or diesel model, averaging between 17 and 24 feet in length and weighing between 8,550 and 11,030 pounds. While other classes of RVs most often use a chassis that's similar to a bus or massive truck, Class B motorhomes sit on the chassis of a van or smaller truck, and they most often have driving controls similar to classic trucks or cars.
This makes these vehicles far easier to drive and navigate into tight parking spaces than their larger counterparts. Additionally, the compact size of a Class B means you'll be able to drive wherever the wind takes you, even into areas that Class A motorhomes won't be able to fit, such as dense urban areas or venues. Whether you want to cruise the highway and set up camp alongside a national park or explore the city and park at a hotel, a Class B will make the whole journey a breeze.
Fuel Efficiency
When it comes to fuel efficiency, there are even more reasons to choose a Class B motorhome for your next RV. Class B RVs get the best fuel efficiency out of any type of RV due to their compact size and less complicated mechanics. The average fuel efficiency for a Class B RV is between 18 and 25 mpg, while a Class A RV will average between 6 and 10 mpg. You might even find a Class B that performs above the average here, but there won't be a Class A that comes even close.
The fuel that a Class B takes can also make them easier to maintain and drive than some other types of motorhomes. For instance, some Class A motorhomes only take special diesel fuel that requires regular chemical treatment, while Class B motorhomes use traditional fuel, just like your car. This means when you opt for a Class B, you'll be able to stop at your favorite gas station and fuel up with ease.
Luxurious Amenities
While their size is much smaller than a Class A model, Class B motorhomes don't ask you to compromise on amenities. Even with reduced space, most Class B models come with luxurious amenities that give you all the comforts of home while you're on the road. For instance, galley kitchens are common in these RVs, giving you a sink, cooktop, and counter space. You'll also likely find a bathroom with a shower and toilet, complete with running water. There's even room for your favorite home appliances, as many Class Bs come with refrigerators and hookups for televisions.
All Class B's typically include some form of sleeping arrangement as well, making it easy to bring your friends along for the trip. On some Class B motorhomes, you'll find a full-size bed in the rear that stays ready for you to snooze any time you need. It's also common for Class Bs to have sofas or seating areas that convert into beds, so you can enjoy your space during the day and then recline and relax at night.
Class B vs. Class B+ Motorhomes
There are a few of the key pros and cons of Class B and Class B+ motorhomes.
Class B
The biggest advantages of a Class B motorhome are its compact size and easy drivability. With a smaller build than almost any other type of RV, it's simple to maneuver a Class B around any type of area.
There are a few cons to Class Bs, one of which is that they often have less storage space than other types of RVs because they don't have as much room on the interior and usually don't include extra cabs or pop-outs. While you'll still have impressive amenities and comfort features, there's less space to spread out in a traditional Class B.
As Class B motorhomes are compact, they're often preferable for drivers who like to spend a lot of time out on the road. If you enjoy setting out on long road trips and sleeping in your vehicle wherever you please, a traditional Class B is likely the perfect RV for you.
Class B+
A Class B+ motorhome includes all of the amenities of a Class B but with a bit more room. The size of a Class B+ motorhome can be seen as both a pro and a con, as you'll have more room inside to relax and extra storage space, but you'll also have a harder time navigating small roads. With the average Class B+ having a length of between 23 and 25 feet, they're a bit more complicated to park in tight spaces, and you'll need to pay attention to potential hazards on city drives.
Because Class B+ RVs come with an attached cab chassis that adds on a larger body for more living space, these can be a better option for drivers who have large families. With a Class B+, you can enjoy all the comforts of a Class B with a bit more room and sleeping space, making them the perfect ride for drivers with children.
